The Community Issues Committee of City Council will be meeting with a panel of independent specialists around the issue of drilling within City limits.  This meeting is open to the general public.

(Doors will open at 6:30 p.m.)

The purpose of this meeting is to provide an opportunity for City Council and the citizens of Lethbridge to obtain information and gain education around the issue of oil drilling within the limits of the City of Lethbridge.  Topics areas will include:

  • Tenure and How Mineral Leases are Awarded (Brenda Ponde, Alberta Energy)
  • Drilling Processes (Dr. Douglas Schmitt, University of Alberta)
  • Regulatory Framework and Public Safety (Bob Willard, Alberta Energy Regulator)
  • Public Health (Dr. Vivien Suttorp, Alberta Health Services)
  • Municipal Responsibilities and Jurisdiction (Jeff Greene, Brian Cornforth – City of Lethbridge)

Panel members were chosen for their knowledge and expertise in the defined topic areas as they relate to the broad issue of urban drilling.  

PROCESS


A Community Issues Committee (CIC) meeting is an information gathering committee of City Council relating to community issues and actively involves citizens, community organizations and businesses on issues that affect them.  CIC meetings are chaired by the Deputy Mayor, currently Councillor Ryan Parker.
  • 7 - 8 p.m. - Presentations by panelists
  • 8 - 8:30 p.m. - Questions from City Council
  • 8:30 - 8:45 p.m. - Break
  • 8:45 - 9:30 p.m. - Questions from the audience

This meeting will be streamed live on the City of Lethbridge website and here on SouthernAlberta.com


In order for panelists to be prepared to address questions from the community, we are asking that questions be submitted by clicking here and completing the form

Forms are also available at City Clerk’s Office, 2nd Floor, City Hall, 910 – 4th Avenue South. If possible, we are asking that questions be submitted by 4:30 p.m. on Friday February 21st, 2014.
