Countdown to Christmas

We’re going all in this festive season, celebrating local makers, bakers and creators, kind gestures and local shops, delicious sips, snacks, curbside pick-ups, hops and coffee stops!

Local shops and makers

In Medicine Hat, we are spoiled for choice when it comes to local shopping. From local retailers to artisans, you’re sure to find the perfect something for everyone on your list! And with the launch of Shop YXH, you can skip the queue and shop locally online from the comfort of your couch.

Order-in and fill-up!
Supporting our local restaurants, cafes, breweries, and distilleries right now is critical. Food and drink bring people together and reflect culture and creativity. Our local restaurants, cafes, breweries, and distilleries are central to the vibrancy of our city. And while we can’t gather together now, we need to ensure that our local establishments are here when we can once again. So, for now, order-in, fill-up your growler, and order your coffee and coffee beans locally, and tip big. Find a list of what places are offering Delivery & Pick-up options here.

Donate

Give the gift of giving back. A donation to a local charity makes a great gift! The Medicine Hat News Santa Clause Fund, Medicine Hat & District Food Bank and The Medicine Hat Women’s Shelter are just a few examples of outstanding and dearly needed supports in our community. Donating blood is another simple (and free) way to give back. We will be asking for suggestions on our Instagram Stories this week - so watch for your chance to offer additional suggestions!

Gift cards

A gift card to a local store is always a great gift, and hey - if they don’t love it, it’s also the perfect re-gift. You can’t go wrong! Purchasing gift cards helps those businesses make it through right now and helps you decide on dinner or a gift later on. It’s a win-win.

Write a review
It might not seem like a lot but writing a review is a powerful way to show your support and has real value for businesses. This small but meaningful action amplifies their share of voice in the market, helps build their brand, improve their searchability, and increases their online ranking, which, just like making a purchase, has an economic impact. And, of course, it makes those business owners smile from ear to ear! So why not spend a bit of time today and write a review for your favourite local business. Leave a review on TripAdvisor, Google Reviews, Yelp or wherever else you read reviews.

Podcasts and blogs

We have some great local content creators, and what’s more, they do all the hard work of staying up-to-date and in-the-loop with everything local, so you don’t have to. Give 8 Minutes with Apex a listen and check-out Burk & Co’s blog - and PS: they’ve got the gift guides to help you check even the hardest to shop for off your list!

Book a Staycation

Been feeling like you are stuck at home a lot lately‚Ķ us too. Why not spoil yourself with a night away from it all. Close the blinds, rent a movie, order in and just enjoy a different setting. Many local hotels are offering staycation packages and of course would love to have you. There are also wonderful little independent B&B’s like Guesthouse 71 that is just 10 minutes out of town. Rent the place for a day or two and enjoy the comfort of country life, while also so close to the city! This is a way to support our local tourism businesses, while also spoiling yourself!

Spread your influence

You may not feel like an influencer, but posting about your favourite local shop, or that delicious drink you just ordered makes a difference for those businesses. It also doubles as a “hint-hint” for Santa (or whoever is buying for you this year). And, above all, it gives that business a boost and maybe encourages a few others to check them out!

These are just some of the ways you can support local this holiday season. So pick one or two - or all of them if you can and help keep our amazing local businesses going!
