Plenty of fundraisers, plays and the Electric Eye this week
The Electric Eye Music Festival dominates most venues this week.
There
will be over 60 bands playing from May 11-15 at the Slice, Owl Acoustic
Lounge, Plum, SAAG and Attainable Records. There will also be comedy at
the Two Guys and A Pizza Place.
However there are a lot of options of you aren’t into alternative music including a couple of fundraisers.
The Troyanda Ukrainian Club celebrate Vesna or Spring with a pair of gala performance at the Yates Theatre, May 10 and 11.
Grade
Three classes show everything they have learned at their May 10 show
which features students from 15 Southern Alberta schools.
It
will be the warm up for Troyanda’s annual year end Vesna celebration of
Spring, May 11. Tickets for Vesna are available through the Ticket
Centre (403) 329-7328 or online. They cost $15 for adults, $12 for
students and seniors, Children 12 and under can get in for $5. Vesna
begins at 7 p.m.
If you like laid back traditional folk music, there are a couple of excellent options.
Celtic
folk singer John McDermott returns to Lethbridge to play the Yates
Theatre, May 12 at 7 p.m. He has just released two new CDs,
Traditionally Yours,” and most recently “Raised on Songs and Stories.”
The Lethbridge Folk Club wind up their season by bringing Northern B.C French Canadian duo Vazzy to the Lethbridge College Cave. They play an array of traditional French Canadian music plus original material. They are also bilingual, so they explain their songs in English. The concert begins at 8 p.m. Tickets are $25 for Folk Club members, Vazzy and opening act George Fowler play the Lethbridge College Cave at 8 p.m., May 14. Tickets cost $25 for Lethbridge Folk Club members, $30 for invited guests.
The Onion features local singer songwriter Gabriel Thaine, on May 13.
Earlier in the day, Dale Ketcheson returns to the Mocha Cabana, May 13. Duelling Pianos returns to Average Joes, May 13 as well.
Talented
Vancouver based classical/ fingerstyle guitarist Kris Shulz brings his
“While The Nation Sleeps” tour to the Mocha Cabana for a special
Thursday night show, May 12 in support of his new CD “ While the City
Sleeps.”
The first handful of several fundraisers for victims of the Fort McMurray wildfires this weekend and they both have a country flavour.
On
May 14, Coyote Joes hosts Trvor Panczak plus Shane Chisholm and the
Lethbridge Firefighters Pipes and Drums. Doors open at 6:30 p.m., the
music is at 8 p.m. Tickets are $30 with all proceeds going to the Red
Cross.
The Coaldale Kinsman Club are bringing in country
stars Doc Walker to the Coaldale Sportsplex on Saturday, May 14. Tickets
cost $45. Doors open at 8 p.m. The music begins at 9 p.m. All net
proceeds will be donated to the Red Cross as part of the Kinsmen Club of
Coaldale’s efforts to help families affected by the fires in Fort
McMurray. Tickets are available at www.ticketweb.ca or at Van Rijn

Also
on Sunday, get some religion at Southminster United Church as some of
Lethbridge's best musical talent will be participating in the
beginning of Pentecost Hymn festival, May 15 at 3 p.m.
Go to L.A. Beat for a feature on the Electric Eye Music festival and interviews with performers Striker and Lab Coast. Later on there will be an interview with Maddy Corvette of Durban Poison about the Electric Eye Shake Records showcase. On a non electric Eye related note, there are interviews with Vazzy who play two Lethbridge shows this week and John McDermott. There are also reviews of shows plus LMT ’s fundraising production of Nunsense. There is also a feature on Hatrix Theatre’s production of the 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee. Look for a review of that show as well.
