Lethbridge Pride Fest Celebrates Five Years

Pride Fest is returning for its 5th year and the event is only getting bigger and better.

Reid Hollander, from Lethbridge Pride Fest, has been hard at work with organizers to put the event together in time.

"In past years, a celebration of Pride in June, meant someone was having a backyard barbecue to celebrate," Reid says. "Pride was celebrated in private."

He explains that the celebration then grew to a restaurant, then a bigger restaurant and then finally to a full event in Galt Gardens. Lethbridge Pride Fest is now a week long event that includes a flag raising at City Hall, a church service and breakfast hosted by the Affirm Committee of McKillop United and an awards night hosted by the OutReach Society of Southern Alberta.

A new piece to this year's event that organizers are excited to announce is the parade on June 22. The parade kicks off at noon and participants will be walking and driving the route, which starts at City Hall. From City Hal, the route will go north on Stafford Drive, west along 3rd Avenue South to 5th Street South, then north on 2nd Avenue South and then enter into Galt Gardens. Everyone is welcome to come out and cheer along the route. Music is set to kick off shortly thereafter in Galt Gardens.

As far as entertainment, expect to see local talent performing for Pride Fest such as Shaela Miller and Cosmic Charlie. Other artists will be performing at The Owl Acoustic Lounge on June 18 as well as other premier entertainment in the park and throughout the week. A Pride Dance will be held at Casa featuring Shangela, a contestant from RuPaul's Drag Race. Tickets are now available and can be purchased online

Barefoot at the Bordello is a three-day event that will take place throughout Pride Fest. This is a group of entertainers who have partnered with Lethbridge Pride Fest sponsor Barefoot Winery and have agreed to do some of the skits from the 10 anniversary show of 'Pretty, Witty and Gay.'

Lethbridge Pride Fest has been successful for so many years thanks to their proud sponsors. The Heart of the City and Downtown Lethbridge are proud to support this event in the downtown core each year. Other sponsors include GayCalgary, Catwalk, Mocha Cabana, Pyramid Entertainment, Holiday Inn Express and Suites, Lethbridge Scion, Lethbridge HIV Connection The Owl Acoustic Lounge, Scotiabank, Bordello (TheatreOutre) and PSAC Local 30048.

Whether you've been to Lethbridge Pride Fest before or not, the coming week is something to check out.
